Hip Hop Honors and Why It Was So Important
I don't watch TV often. Most of the time I'm on Netflix or looking at makeup tutorials on YouTube. When I do watch TV it's definitely for a special occasion. What could be more special than seeing the queens of Hip Hop being honored with special tributes by other women in the industry? Not much if you ask me. If you know me, you know I am a huge Hip Hop lover. If you really know me, you know I'm all for the unity and love of black women. With that being said, I was very eager to see this ceremony and all my expectations were met.
The event focused on honoring the OG's of the female rap game which are Lil Kim, Missy Elliot, and Salt N Pepa featuring DJ Spinderella. It was also hosted by another gem in Hip Hop, Eve.The honors ceremony had several energetic performances through out the show accompanied by tons of tributes to the honorees from new and old generation artist. I will post details and highlights of the show soon.
Now, in this message I just want to give praise to the event. When we think of women in Hip Hop we tend to think of the rivalry between artist as well as the fight for the Queen status. Healthy competition is good for art, but there is a line that can be crossed. Reality shows like Love and Hip Hop or even Sisterhood in Hip Hop display unhealthy competition and strife amongst the women featured. However, in this event there was nothing but love given to everybody from everybody. Everybody there brought different styles and views but they all got the same respect. That is how it should always be.
There aren't many women in this male dominated industry of hip hop. So the small percentage of women that are involved need to protect each other and appreciate each other. Show the men they might have a run for their money. Regardless if you are a women in hip hop or not, just leave with the following. When you see a queen you don't have to be best friends but just let them know you see their hustle and to stay up. By ourselves we can make magic happen, but when we link up we take it to another level. Like Queen Latifa said it's all about UNITY.
