Black lives and minds matter.
Here we go again. Another, innocent pedestrian murdered in cold blood for absolutely nothing. The one factor that led this to happen, the color of their skin. Except, this time in the course of 24 hours there wasn't just one case like this, there was in fact 2. Alton Sterling, a father of 5, who was trying to make a living by selling CD's in front of a store, shoot 6 times on video. Philando Castline, shot and killed in a car alongside his fiance and her daughter. Although this is horrifying, sadly enough can we really say it is shocking? The list of people lost from police brutality seems to grow every day. So no, I personally cannot say any of these events are shocking, and that is very sad.
Not to mention, seeing these things on video. It shouldn't be normal to see someone dying on your TL. However, in these recent events there has been pictures and video surfaced on mass media and no one has taught about the effects it has on peoples lives. Just think of the family of these victims. Could you imagine what it would be like seeing your brother or father, someone you're close to literally being murdered right in front of your eyes? I don't care what you say that type of stuff will mess you up and scar you for life. So why does the internet and news media just throw this out here to us like it's okay? I understand taping this to get evidence but even doing that isn't bringing justice. Not to mention, the people who record these things get prosecuted. So what is really the benefit of these recordings and who exactly do they benefit because its definitely not us?
One should not even question the emotions people feel after witnessing and seeing the constant execution of black and brown people. Heartbreak, sadness, depression, and of course anger would be a product of this. So when I see my fellow people protest or even riot, I do not question them. As I previously stated, stuff like this messes you up. However, there is a line that should not be crossed. Just a day after the murders of Philando and Alton, a peaceful protest in Dallas, Texas took a turn for the worst when shots went of. A man killed 5 police officers and wounded 12. Fighting fire with fire will never result in anything good. Also, the cops killed were not guilty of the crime we are fighting against. While it may be hard to turn the other cheek, it is definitely for the best. If us as black people, lose control and get violent like officers do to our people that gives them more of a reason to condemn and oppress us. If we want to fight the system we would have to use a different attack.
I definitely don't have all the answers but I do know that change is needed, I also know we are not going to get anywhere if we make the same mistakes. So think about the psychological effects viewing gruesome video will have on us before sharing it. Also, think of the consequences that retaliating with violence will bring. If we really want to fight the system we have to really know the system and their tactics. The most sneakiest attack is the one that is not physical.
