Positive Self-Talk: How to incorporate it into your Everyday Life
I read a quote once that went something like this. “Don’t talk to yourself in a way that you wouldn’t talk to someone else.” When I read that it hit me like a sack of Nokia 3310's. It made me realize how toxic some of thoughts are. I wouldn’t tell my friends “you can never do anything right” or “you're so stupid” so why am I telling myself this? We all take jabs at ourselves internally from time to time. When we do, it could be a response to the littlest things like forgetting your charger or bumping into a wall. In some cases it could be a response to something a little more serious like failing a class or not getting your dream job. Regardless of the situation, it is important to monitor the things we say to ourselves. A small thought could seem insignificant but it actually is quite the opposite. See recently, I’ve been learning about this cool thing called the Law of Attraction. The gist is quite simple. Everything we think, those thoughts will be put into the universe and eventually will manifest in reality. These thoughts become even more powerful when they are repeated over time. So just think about how harmful negative self-talk can be if you’re constantly downing yourself. Instead of internally bullying yourself, try a different approach. Instead of down playing yourself, talk yourself up with positive self-talk. You can incorporate positive self talk into your everyday life by following these steps.
Turn Negative Thoughts Into Positive Affirmations
A simple way to incorporate more positive thoughts into your life is using positive affirmations. These are statements you say to yourself to put you in a good head space and attract good things into your life. You can hack your negative thoughts by flipping them into positive affirmations. If you think “I can never do anything right” flip it and say “I prosper in everything I do.'' It might seem forced and silly at first, especially if you don’t truly believe what you’re saying, but you know what they say fake it ‘til you make it. Just like your negative thoughts, if you repeat it enough times you will start to believe it and those affirmations will manifest into real life.
Pay Attention to What You Have Instead of Lack
Sometimes we can be our worst critic. We obsess over things we lack and beat ourselves up for not having that quality. “I wish I was smarter” or “I wish I had more friends” or “I wish my booty was bigger”. You might think thinking about the things you want will attract them due to the law of attraction but when these thoughts are covered in desperation and self-deprecation it can do the opposite. So instead of sitting in that pity pool you created for yourself, get up and focus on the things you got. Yeah you might not have an Einstein brain but you have hella creativity. You might not have many friends but the ones you have love you and are loyal as f*ck. You might have a cupcake booty but you have a smile as pretty as pearls. Nobody has it all, but everybody has something.
Show Gratitude
You never know what you have until it’s gone. So show gratitude for everything you have while you have it. There are many aspects of our lives that we take for granted. Showing gratitude allows us to see all the good things in our lives and thank the universe, or whatever divine entity you praise, for giving us these things. Some things we view as simple, such as having a bed to sleep in and access to clean water are blessings that some people unfortunately don’t have. We can even overlook things we have, that many would be grateful for, just because we are used to them. Having gratitude increases room for more positive thoughts because it allows us to see we can go through trauma and stressful situations but still come out with something good. Besides, how can we expect more good things to come our way if we are not even thankful for the things we have already?
