Ways to Clear Your Mind

Don’t you wish your mind just had an off-switch sometimes? I know I do. Sometimes it seems as if I’m simultaneously going through a million thoughts at once. They could be thoughts about planning for the future thoughts about an embarrassing thing I did in 2011. Whatever the case is, when my mind is on 10, it is likely to give me figurative and literal headache. Not to mention, overthinking about anything can lead to anxiety and downward spiral thinking. So with that being said, even though I can’t switch off my mind, I find ways to push reset.

Mediation
Meditation is my go to answer for just about any problem you have mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. The number one thing that I feel like it does right from the start is clear your mind. Mediation is literally using a technique to focus on one particular object, activity, or thought. With that being said, it can be used as a tool to dump out all those unnecessary thoughts and turn your attention to just one thing that truly matters. Meditation has also been proven to calm anxiety and help reach a more blissful state.

Change your Scenery
When you have a lot on your mind, it can feel like you are in a box that's slowly caving in. For me, this happens often especially when I’m cramped inside my room with just me and my thoughts. If you can relate to this, the best thing to do is go to a different space. You can step outside, and get some fresh air. Maybe go to your local park, or even just go for a drive. Staying in one space for too long can be damaging if you aren’t in a good mental state. This is because you are used to the space therefore you barely have any outside stimulus for your mind to focus on. With that being said, changing your environment can allow you to get out your head by taking in everything around you.

Get Active
Your mental state can be put into overdrive when your physical state has been at rest for too long. So a way to combat with a lot on your mind is to put your energy somewhere else in a physical activity. You can go for a run, bike ride, or even head to the gym. Once you get your heart rate going the only thing you’re going to be focusing on is not dying (that’s if you go hard like me).

Write It Out
If you find yourself constantly thinking about the same thing or if something on your mind is damn near driving you insane, address those thoughts by putting them on paper. This is a good tactic to use when you need to let stuff out but you don’t necessarily want to share it with others.

Talk it Out
If writing your thoughts on paper isn’t good enough for you, try actually discussing your thoughts with someone you trust. This can be hard for some and might not even be considered an option for others. Some people think that no one will relate to or understand their thoughts or  they fear they will judge them. However, keeping intense thoughts and feelings to yourself will ultimately drive you crazy. Also, if you are confiding in someone who actually cares about you, they most likely aren’t going to judge you. So if nothing else on this list works, tell somebody what’s on your mind. Just venting alone, can make you feel a lot better.
