Books I Read This Summer

With all the free time I've had this summer, I have tried to make it as useful as I could. So along with working, filling out scholarships, and of course working on this blog, I have reconnected with my love of reading. Even though I love reading, I am not an avid reader. This is due to not having enough time, my social media addiction, and by simply not finding any good reads. However, this summer I was lucky enough to find some pretty interesting material. So I'm gonna give you all the details and my rank on all the books I've read

1. milk and honey by Rupi Kaur

This probably not the first time you heard of this title. This book has gained major popularity on social medias like tumblr and Instagram and you have probably seen a poem or two from the book on your TL. So you might be wondering what is all the hype about and is it worth the hype? Well, to start off I will give you an intro to what its about. Milk and Honey is a collective of poems and prose about the author's experience with trauma, love, self love, and femininity. The book is sectioned off into  four parts which are labeled, the hurting, the loving, the breaking, and the healing. In my opinion this book is definetley worth the hype and has become one of my favorite reads. Rupi's words are simple yet so impacting and that is why I love it so much. This book is very relatable from a woman's point of view and also encouraging. It is soft yet powerful.

2. Don't Touch My Hair by Phobe Robinson

The title of this book and cover of the author with big wild curls automatically intrigued me. The author, Phoebe Robinson, comedian and writer, gives her take on everything from black hair, to her "white people" taste in music, to ridiculous casting calls. Her approach on all these subjects are both honest yet comical. She also brought to light stereotypes black women or black people in general have to deal with everyday. In my opinion this is a great read for anybody and it is also mind opening to the complexes of race and femininity. I must admit being that she is a comedian there are times where she goes off track into jokes that are sometimes exaggerated or even forced. Regardless, there were also other times where the jokes where so relatable that you can't help but snicker a little bit.

3. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck by Mark Manson
The title might attract you or shock you but regardless please believe me it is one book you want to pick up. This by far has to be one of the greatest "self help" books I have read in my 18 years of  living on this Earth. However, this book is not like any other self help book you have read. It is blunt and honest. This book is not going to give you positive affirmations and tell you to smile through the pain. Rather, it is realistic and reminds you that sometimes pain is necessary. I admit there were some points in the book where I was skeptical but when he really broke things down I understood. There was also times where things got deep pretty quickly.  So, if you choose to read this book keep an open mind and really pay attention. I promise it will change your mindset for the better.

  1. #3 definitely intrigued me, especially because getting through life's obstacles on my own self motivation is something I have improved on but, of course am also still working on.
