The New Era of Female Rappers

With rap being a male dominated genre, it is only a few women that have been truly noticed on the mic. Some greats like Queen Latifa, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Eve, and other artist have had their spotlight over the years. Artist like them paved the way for the biggest female rapper of today Nicki Minaj. She has probably dominated the female rap scene for the past 7 years. This is actually the first year that Nicki Minaj hasn't won the Best Female Rapper category in the BET awards. Even though the rapper lost the award to her recent rival and comeback artist, Remy Ma, she still holds a solid spot in the overall prominence of female rappers.
However, through all this time in the past 7 years I have wondered who else is there? Recently other female rappers such as Cardi B, Young M.A, and Kamaiyah have earned some shine and thats honestly great. All the people mentioned above all have something unique and refreshing about them. This isn't going to be an article where I am putting these females against each other. Instead, I am encouarging all these artist to continue to thrive in this genre. There are several rap Kings in this industry so why can't there be a few Queens?
With that being said, I think its time to bring attention to some more women who are putting their styles on hip hop and who deserves more attention.

1. Kari Faux

Reppin' my hometown of Little Rock, AR, Kari brings a something different to the traditional southern rap. She gained popularity when noticed by rapper Childish Gambino, making a remix to her song "No Small Talk". Her eccentric style inspired by the internet and trap music births a cool new perspective in rap.

2. Princess Nokia

The Brooklyn rapper Princess Nokia is anything but conformative. She is very expressive along with her body positivity lyrics and "I do what I want" attitude. Her bold but honest lyrics along with loud and energetic flow is definitely something worth seeing.

3. Doja Cat

If you can't tell by the name, this one is for my chill people out there. Doja, spits mellow bars above warm euphoric beats that were made for vibing. She also has a soft, melodic voice that she sometimes uses for harmonizing over tracks.

4. Rico Nasty

If you want something lit this is definitely the girl to go to. Always hype and always flexing, her boastful raps and animated style are similar to new stars such as Lil Uzi Vert, Famoux Dex, or Lil Yatchy. Speaking of Lil Yatchy she even collaborated with him on the remix of her song "Hey Arnold."

5. Angel Haze

Hardcore with no remorse, the first thing that comes to mind when describing Angel Haze. The rapper has aggressive bars with lines that you might think twice about. Certainly, no one new to the game but definitely one that is overlooked. If you are an avid fan of lyricism and fire bars you will enjoy this one.

6. Ingrid

Signed to Beyonce's label Parkwood Entertainment, like the labels owner she is nothing far from great. Formally a songwriter for Beyonce herself she decided to step out on her own as an artist. She has chill vibe that she matches with a solid flow and elaborate bars. When you are a protege of Queen Bey excellence is expected.

7. Noname

Quirky and vibrant, Noname isn't what you would expect as a rapper. That is what makes her shine. Noname provides soulful music that is honest. Her bars are very smooth but yet complex. Certainly, a pleasant vibe.

I got a feeling that soon, some of these artist will get the shine they deserve. Just remember who put you on first 😉.
