Things I Have Learned This Summer

Image
The summer after senior year of high school is said to be the last summer of ones youth. Maybe known as the last chance to be reckless and to have fun without responsibility. For me this was partially true. I had fun, saw my favorite artist J. Cole. I spent nights with friends that turned into early mornings. I even had some moments that I could never forget. However, this was only a portion of my summer. The rest was a big wake up call. I lost some people I thought would never fold. I realized things that I didn't see before. I felt like it was in fact the last summer of my youth. This is because it was the first of adulthood. This is what I uncovered. 1. When People Show You Who They Are, Believe Them All that glitters is not gold. Sometimes when we meet new people or even interact with people whom we have known forever, we have these preconceived ideas of them. I have met people who I immediately vibed with and thought we would rock forever. I have developed friendships ov...

Books I Read This Summer

Image
With all the free time I've had this summer, I have tried to make it as useful as I could. So along with working, filling out scholarships, and of course working on this blog, I have reconnected with my love of reading. Even though I love reading, I am not an avid reader. This is due to not having enough time, my social media addiction, and by simply not finding any good reads. However, this summer I was lucky enough to find some pretty interesting material. So I'm gonna give you all the details and my rank on all the books I've read 1. milk and honey by Rupi Kaur This probably not the first time you heard of this title. This book has gained major popularity on social medias like tumblr and Instagram and you have probably seen a poem or two from the book on your TL. So you might be wondering what is all the hype about and is it worth the hype? Well, to start off I will give you an intro to what its about. Milk and Honey is a collective of poems and prose about the au...

Dating A Black Feminist in 2017

Image
By Paul Barnes “Men are liars.” “Men are trash.” “I hate men.” These are the types of quotes I see daily on various timelines on my social media. They do not apply to me personally but, the issue is they apply to SO many men that we have become generalized by said quotes. Adding the word “some” or even “most” would make these quotes accurate...sad, but still accurate. And, we can not ignore the fact that these posts usually aren’t just referring to men in general but specifically BLACK men. You know it’s true. Now as you read this, you may be reflecting on the multiple black men who have wronged you over years of your life and I am honestly sorry you had to go through that. But as Jesse Jackson used to say “Keep hope alive!” We are all not “bad” or “trash” but just a little misguided. I am going to show you why from my own on going experience in dating a black feminist in 2017. Me and my girl have been together since February 14,2016. (Yes, I picked that date on purpose). When ...

My Current Beauty Obsession: Colored Wings

Image
The winged liner, or "cat eye" is something that is has been a staple in nearly every flawless makeup look since 2010. There have been many versions of this trend such as double wing, sleek wing, or thick wing. Most of these done with the classic black liner. However, the winged eyeliner trend has recently been revamped and now involves color and I am so here for it.😄 This is a collection of some of my favorite looks thus far of this trend.  ig : @keilakattt I am far from a beauty guru but I dabble with colors from time to time and plan to make my own version of this trend. So stay tuned for an update on this to see if I slayed (or failed) this trend. Which look is your Favorite? Comment Below!

Mood Mondays: A playlist

For this week on Mood Monday I'm taking it back a little bit. I'm giving you a 2000's/2010's throwback playlist. If you know me you know that I am an avid music enthusiast. Black Women are Human Too

Image
Being a black woman comes with a lot of expectations. You are expected to be thick, have a big booty, dance or sing on cue, be ratchet or woke, and always stand your ground. All things that people expect, good or bad, categorize black women as some predictable being that is always defiant. However, what people often ignore from black women is emotion. Throughout history black women have been strong beings. Whether they support fellow brown people in times of adversity, tell someone off for outrageous behavior, our still strive despite daily struggles black women are often looked at as a defiant creature. However, at the end of the day they are human. They feel just as much as the next person. They have break downs, they cry, they have fear, they have pain. They feel. Often the only emotion recognized of black women is anger. The "angry black woman" stereotype is nothing new and nearly any black woman can be given that label as soon as they say something the masses don...

The New Era of Female Rappers

Image
With rap being a male dominated genre, it is only a few women that have been truly noticed on the mic. Some greats like Queen Latifa, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Eve, and other artist have had their spotlight over the years. Artist like them paved the way for the biggest female rapper of today Nicki Minaj. She has probably dominated the female rap scene for the past 7 years. This is actually the first year that Nicki Minaj hasn't won the Best Female Rapper category in the BET awards. Even though the rapper lost the award to her recent rival and comeback artist, Remy Ma, she still holds a solid spot in the overall prominence of female rappers. However, through all this time in the past 7 years I have wondered who else is there? Recently other female rappers such as Cardi B, Young M.A, and Kamaiyah have earned some shine and thats honestly great. All the people mentioned above all have something unique and refreshing about them. This isn't going to be an article where I am putting thes...

Get a Full Body Glow

Image
Summer is in full effect and that makes it the perfect time to put our precious melanin on display. But if you're going to show it off you gotta do it right. The only way to do that is make sure you GLOWWW. So you got to go harder than the average cocoa butter lotion and coconut oil. To have the ultimate glow you should add shimmer to your routine. The solution to that is to get a body shimmer oil. So I have gathered up a list of shimmer oils that will turn you into a glow goddess instantly. 1.  Morrocanoil Shimmering Body Oil  ($48) Made with an infusion of argan oil and seasame oil this will guarantee a healthy looking glow. 2. NARS Monoi Body Glow  ($59) One of my favorite makeup brands developed this glamourous body oil that uses Monoi de Tahiti oil to give you a luxurious feeling glow. This oil also gives a slight tint to give you a tanned feel as well as shimmer. 3. Honey Bronze Shimmering Dry Oil ($22) This products main ingredient of Ethiopian h...

Why SZA's "Ctrl" is One of a Kind

Image
Solána Imani Rowe, a beautiful soul that often goes by the stage name of SZA. She is the only female artist signed to Top Dawg Entertainment Records, the label that blessed us with other talented artist such as Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, and Isaiah Rashad. So it might come as no surprise that she is marvelous and refreshing af. The "Love Galore" singer has been gaining recognition in the music world due to positive reception of her debut album Ctrl which dropped on June 9th . But if you know me, you know I have been a dedicated fan since her 2013 single "Teen Spirit" (which I highly recommend you listen to if you haven't). Nevertheless, seeing her pop up on my TL on Instagram or seeing videos of fellow brown girls lip syncing "The Weekend" or "Supermodel" on Snapchat gives me the excitement of when i first discovered her. She is has certainly grown and is on her way up in the music industry. What I believe makes her stand out is not only...

Stop Using These Things to Cope

We all get sad from time to time. It is human nature and completely unavoidable. You seen Inside Out didn't you? Sadness might be an annoying little thing but she is necessary to move on to better emotions. That still doesn't mean dealing with it is easy. Sometimes we even deal with it the wrong way. Sometimes we form habits or cling to things that won't necessarily give us happiness but instead give us a distraction from sadness. Here are a list of unhealthy coping mechanisms you need to stop right now: 1. Burying your sorrows in ice cream They don't call it comfort food for no reason. Food, especially sugary and fatty foods, can seem like a definite way to ease some pains of life. It is even scientifically proven that sugary treats can release a large amount of a chemical named dopamine into your brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that controls the brain's reward and pleasure system. So technically speaking you can get a high off your favorite cookies and c...

Struggles of an Introvert

Just be yourself. This is a common phrase heard in society, but can everybody really live by this? Sure, they can. However, will they be accepted? Uhh not so sure. In this world we live in, specifically America, most things are catered to a specific group of people. There are many groups that have privilege in this world such as Caucasians, heterosexuals, cis, and able people. Nevertheless, I want to take a moment to point out the privilege extroverts have. Extroverts have a slight advantage in being themselves. Their natural self is outgoing and people oriented. Job Interviews, social gatherings, business meetings, all these things are instances where the extrovert can almost easily shine (assuming that they have a decent personality). However, for introverts it takes a little more of a push and sometimes even acting to excel. Being that I am an introvert and an awkward one at that, I face everyday struggles that no one except for fellow introverts can relate to. Here are some of ...

Scorpio

Scorpios have the gift of intense power. The question is what does one do with such power Use it for evil or good? Ethereal bliss or destruction? Love is deep, passionate Completely selfless,  yet foolishly blind.  Yet, vengeance is sharp. Hard and harsh. Completely careless, No mercy of any kind. Choosing sides are conflicting, So hard to find a balance. But either side I pick, No action will be a challenge.

Late Night Post - Blog Update

There has never been anything about me that has been conventional. I have always been a little quirky, awkward, or just simply unique. Whether it be the way I walk, the way I talk, my unpopular opinions, or my diverse style. With that being said, the way I think could possibly be different too. My head at times can be jumbled with thoughts, shallow or deep, sometimes incomplete. I am always coming up with different ideas or concepts about different aspects of life. This is most likely the reason I am so decisive. But for now I have made a decision about this blog. I am gonna take a more laid back approach to it. I often have several ideas for new post, however, I almost always dismiss it due to doubting the topic will have much content, being not sure if people will be interested, or just in general being vulnerable with my thoughts. I am know putting all of that behind me. Now, most of the most I make will be near unfiltered. I will express my thoughts as real and authentic as they co...

Seeing What is 4 Your Eyez Only

The anticipation of J. Cole's fourth studio album, 4 Your Eyez Only , was very real. The out of the blue release of singles False Prophets and Everybody dies caused a lot of conversation of what we can expect for the album. However, I think it is clear to say no one expected what we got. Cole through me for a loop when I saw the singles weren't even on the track list, evoking mystery in what the projects central theme and motifs would actually be. In the documentary he released a couple days before the album dropped, Eyez , we really got to see how artistic Cole actually is. The very raw footage that Eyez captured included live instruments, vocal artists, and just classic vibing and creation in the studio. The conversations and dedication shown in the short film displayed Cole's humbleness as well as his musical attributes. We even got a peak of some songs that seemed to be apart of the album. In reality, none of the music viewers heard in the documentary were on the album...
