The making of Homegrown Concert Series, Little Rock's best kept secret

Image
Have you ever had a song on your playlist that you skip often but one day you decide to let it play and it turns out to be the best song you heard in a while? Imagine that but instead of just one song it’s a whole collection of songs from a diverse group of artists, and better these artists are all in close proximity to you. This is the idea of ‘Homegrown: the concert series’ produced right here in Little Rock in 2019.  “The mission of [Homegrown] is to be a pub source for local artists and talent,” artist, producer and creator of Homegrown, Stoney Jackson said. “We already have local shows happening around the city, so Homegrown essentially is just my version of that.” Jackson wanted to cultivate an “intimate” concert series that not only features artists and talent from the city but also has a “kickback” vibe to it to where people can gather and revel. “When I got there it was super warming, it was such a different atmosphere compared to what I had been around,” Char Dupin...

Self-Love Affirmation 21 Day Challenge: My experience

Image
So I have been on a rocky self-love journey for about a year or so now. I say rocky because it seemed as if anytime I felt secure in myself and like I've made progress, not too long after that I would slip back into my depressive, self-loathing episodes. I always stayed true to my journey and never completely gave up. However, at times it would seem like I was stuck in the same place and in a constant cycle of feeling okay then feeling horrible. I did seek counseling, meditated, and tried many techniques I've learned from self-help books and YouTube videos, but it seemed like nothing worked. But one thing worth noting is that with all the tips and tricks I tried, I was never fully consistent. Consistency in any type of practice is something I always struggled with. Whether it be working out, cutting out meat, or even posting on my blog, I would always do well in the first couple days or even a few weeks but then something happens, I get lazy and decide to skip that day. Then...

Summer Walker's Over It: Breakdown + Review

Image
Since the beginning of the genre R&B, singers would harmonize over soulful beats while telling their stories of love, sex, and passion. In recent years, current R&B has been criticized for lack of the raw substance that the genre was built off of. Lyrics were becoming artificial and highly sex-driven, vocals filled with too much autotune and lack of talent, beats were becoming less soulful and too hip-hop or too pop. However, there has been a shift in the genre and new up and coming artists have been redefining R&B while still keeping the raw soulful aspect alive. ATL native, Summer Walker is one of those artists. In her debut album, Over It Summer Walker tells a modern love story, while showcasing her strong pen and vocals. She gives us the classic R&B that we grew up on, but instead of the same dreamy love songs we’ve heard before, she gives us songs about love and lust that this generation can relate to because it tells an imperfect story. Walker starts off the a...

5 Apps Every College Student Should Have

Image
1. Quizlet You might have been able to get away with not studying for a test in high school and making a decent B but that will not work in college. You MUST study to pass. Studying can be done easily with this app. Quizlet allows you to create your own set of study material digitally. This is better than regular handwritten cards because once you create your set you can learn them by taking multiple choice quizzes, go over them as flashcards, play a matching game, or even take a practice test. Quizlet is also great because there is also a chance someone else already uploaded a set that you need to study. 2. Scholly Search College is expensive. From tuition, room and board, to textbooks it can cost thousands of dollars that you most likely don’t have. This results in you taking out loans that put you in even more debt. Save yourself the hardship and look into scholarships with this app. Using this app is easier and more convenient than looking on a computer or laptop. After cre...

Positive Self-Talk: How to incorporate it into your Everyday Life

Image
I read a quote once that went something like this. “Don’t talk to yourself in a way that you wouldn’t talk to someone else.” When I read that it hit me like a sack of  Nokia 3310's. It made me realize how toxic some of thoughts are. I wouldn’t tell my friends “you can never do anything right” or “you're so stupid” so why am I telling myself this? We all take jabs at ourselves internally from time to time. When we do, it could be a response to the littlest things like forgetting your charger or bumping into a wall. In some cases it could be a response to something a little more serious like failing a class or not getting your dream job. Regardless of the situation, it is important to monitor the things we say to ourselves.  A small thought could seem insignificant but it actually is quite the opposite. See recently, I’ve been learning about this cool thing called the Law of Attraction. The gist is quite simple. Everything we think, those thoughts will be put into the universe...

Who are the Dreamers? A look into the artist of Revenge of the Dreamers 3

Image
On July 5, Dreamville Records - a label founded by one of the illest rappers out J. Cole- released the highly anticipated compilation album Revenge of the Dreamers 3. Since the beginning of this year fans have been waiting to hear what the Dreamville artists have been cooking up and nobody expected it to be this big. Not only does this album feature the 8 Dreamville artist- J. Cole, Ari Lennox, J.I.D, Lute, Bas, Earthgang, Omen and Cozz but it actually includes many more. In the recording sessions for the album in which many artists referred to it as “rap camp” there were reportedly 343 artist and producers invited and 142 songs recorded. But of course, for the finished product only 15 songs made the cut. In those 15 songs 35 artists are featured along with 27 producers. So yeah it’s kind of a big deal. J. Cole wanted to use this project to not only showcase the artist on his label, but also give artists that have been grinding from the bottom of the trenches a platform to be hea...
